# What is Transfer Printing?

Transfer printing is a technique where the design is first printed on special paper or film, then transferred to fabric using heat and pressure. It has seen major development in recent years, especially with DTF (Direct-to-Film) technology.

Types of Transfer Printing

1. DTF (Direct-to-Film) Transfer

The newest and most popular transfer technology. Design is printed on special PET film, powder adhesive applied, transferred to fabric via heat press.

Advantages:

Works on all fabric colors (light and dark)

Cotton, polyester, blends — all compatible

Unlimited colors

Economical at low quantities

Stockable (films kept ready)

Disadvantages:

Slight film feel on fabric

Breathability decreases on large areas

Less soft than DTG and screen printing

2. Vinyl Transfer (Flex / Flock)

Colored vinyl cut and applied via heat press. Ideal for names, numbers, simple logos.

Advantages:

Can be applied to single pieces

Vivid colors, glossy or matte options

Durable (especially flock)

Disadvantages:

Multi-color designs require layer-by-layer cutting (expensive)

No photo printing

Stiff feel on large areas

3. Sublimation Transfer

Sublimation ink printed on transfer paper, transferred to polyester fabric via heat. Transfer version of sublimation printing.

Advantages:

No print feel (integrates with fabric)

Very durable (200+ washes)

All-over printing possible

Disadvantages:

Only works on white/light polyester

Cannot be applied on cotton
